Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. After the summer's big household trade shows such as Spoga gafa, IFA, Maison & Objet, Tendence and Autumn Fair International, Frankfurt-based style agency Bora.herke has released a report predicting the big trends in home living for 2011.
The report released September 21 predicts that next year's big four trends will be "Cute," "Raw," "Refined," and "Mash." The Cute trend will see the 1950s make a comeback in households across Europe; the trend is characterized by nostalgic designs which use traditional materials given an updated modern look.
Smoother edges, distinct shapes and objects that are inherently functional combine to form the Refined trend. Designs in this category are expected to provide a new definition of classicism and exhibit a more restrained style of design.
The trend Bora.herke defines as Raw is similar to the "products with personality" trend seen at the Tendence design exhibition (September 3-8). Products in this category reject design perfection and instead show signs of wear or obvious construction, - rough wooden furniture and designs with obvious welded seams best categorize this trend.
Bora.herke has predicted that Mash - a combination of colorful, happy and highly expressive and extroverted designs - will also be one of the key trends in home design in 2011. As the term suggests, Mash combines traditional brightly colored ethnic designs and handmade products alongside the latest technologies and highly modern innovative designs.
Products encapsulating these trends will be on display at Ambiente February 11-15, 2011. Grand Designs Live held in Birmingham, UK October 8-10 will also be displaying the latest trends in kitchen, bathroom and garden product design.
