Tool Box: Advice that is at the cutting edge
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.MILLIONS of car buffs know John Haynes as the publisher of guides for DIY motor mechanics. Each shows a complete stripdown and rebuild, an important part of the formula that has made the manuals so successful. The same technique is applied to his two Motor Lawnmowers books ( pounds 10.99 each, hardback). Mowers made by Atco, Qualcast, Flymo, Suffolk Punch and others are split between the two volumes.
Precise (albeit not right up-to- date) information about each model follows a useful introductory chapter. Topics covered include rotary versus cylinder types. The importance of maintenance is also stressed: 'Mowers are probably the most neglected of all household articles.'
Black-and-white photographs complement step-by-step instructions involving such esoteric items as tappet stems, camshaft bearings and needle valve shoulders.
And there is a warning about apparent bargains: 'All that can be said for really low-priced mowers is that they cut grass more quickly than shears. A better-made mower of the same size and type, which is built up to a standard of performance and not down to a price, is the cheapest in the long run.'
