From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The prime minister has announced a national press conference will take place on Tuesday at 5pm.

Aside from the “Stay Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives” mantra familiar from the first lockdown, what is Boris Johnson going to say?

Review of measures

Considering he announced a new national lockdown on Monday night, the PM is likely to give an overview of the new measures and rules, including what you now can and can’t do.

As a reminder, there is now a stay at home order for all those in England, with leaving home only permitted for medical appointments, work for essential workers, escaping domestic abuse and exercise.

The statistics

Mr Johnson is likely to lay out an overview of the key statistics of the pandemic, such as the current number of cases, deaths, and pressure on the NHS.

Additional insight will also be given by the chief medical officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty, and the government's chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance.

Answering questions

The key feature of the news conference will be answering questions from the press and public.

It is likely that he will be asked why schools were allowed to open for just one day, the impact of the announcement on university students, what support there will be for businesses and a timeline for the lockdown and vaccine rollout.
