PHNOM PENH (Reuter) - About 400 French troops were flying out of Cambodia yesterday, officially ending the United Nations' military presence five months after elections which ushered in a democratic government.
The UN began deploying in Cambodia after the signing of the Cambodian peace pact in October 1991. At its height, the force numbered almost 16,000 soldiers and 3,600 police from more than 30 nations. With more than 2,000 civilian staff, overseas volunteers and tens of thousands of Cambodians, it oversaw the successful May elections at a cost of 21 members killed in hostile action before, during and after the polls.
