In New Delhi, the Home Minister, Shakarrao Chavan, told parliament the army had been put on alert in Manipur state and had staged shows of strength in the worst-affected areas.
Most of the victims were Muslims, stabbed or burnt alive. Muslims form 10 per cent of the state's 1.6 million people.
