Pudding parade for Goldberg

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS (AP) - The actress Whoopi Goldberg, who was named woman of the year on Tuesday by Harvard University's Hasty Pudding theatre group, waves to fans as she is escorted through Harvard Square by male students in drag. She was later presented with the group's traditional award a brass pudding pot.

'It's snowing, there's people on the street, there's two guys dressed as women sitting next to me and it's all perfectly legal,' Goldberg said. Asked what she thought of her male escorts, she replied: 'Honey, are those guys just hysterical. I couldn't wear half those dresses.

'I don't think I need a Tony now, I've got my pudding pot,' she said. 'This is a big deal. It's a tradition that is as much a part of America as anything.'

Hasty Pudding Theatricals which, at 145 years old is the nation's most ancient undergraduate drama group has honoured actresses each year since 1951 and actors since 1967. Past recipients include Jodie Foster, Kevin Costner, Clint Eastwood, Robert De Niro and Glenn Close. The comedian Chevy Chase will be named man of the year next week.
