From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Canadian police said today that they had pulled over a car containing "dangerous materials" near the site where an international summit will be held in Toronto this weekend.

Toronto police chief Bill Blair told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. that there had been sticks - possibly ax handles - and gasoline in the car. The driver was arrested.

"It's an important issue not to bring any dangerous materials into any demonstration situation," Blair said, adding it was possible the driver was not connected in any way to the summits or planned protests in Toronto.

Earlier, AFP said police had found five gas canisters, a chain saw and a homemade crossbow in the car.

Canada is hosting two international summits this week. On Friday and Saturday, leaders from the Group of Eight industrialized nations will meet in Huntsville, Ontario, about two hours' drive north of Toronto. The Group of 20 nations will then gather in Toronto on Saturday and Sunday.
