Rome - The La Voce daily newspaper alleged yesterday that senior figures in the Vatican ordered the 1981 shooting in which Pope John Paul was almost killed and that leading Italians were also involved in the plot. Quoting testimony from Oral Celik, a Turk suspected at one time of helping gunman Mehmet Ali Agca, it said Vatican officials ordered Agca to shoot but not kill the Pope. The Vatican termed the report 'ridiculous'. Reuter
