n Manila - The Foreign Minister, Roberto Romulo, resigned in tears yesterday because of the furore over the execution on 17 March of a Filipina maid, Flor Contemplacion, in Singapore, Reuter reports.
He hoped his resignation would calm the intense row over the hanging of the woman, who allegedly confessed to murdering another Filipina maid and a four-year-old Singaporean boy. Singapore ignored impassioned appeals for a stay of execution.
A Philippines inquiry said it had evidence that Contemplacion could have been forced to confess.
