Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. Two car bombs exploded in southern Syria today and a rocket hit a building in the north of the country as a fresh wave of violence hit the country.
The rocket attack in Aleppo and the suicide car bombings in Daraa, south of Damascus, were both blamed on rebel fighters by the government, while opposition activists said pro-regime militia swept through a town in central Syria, torching houses and killing more than 100 people.
The state-run Sana news agency said the attack in Aleppo was carried out by terrorists, a term the regime uses for rebels. But the Local Co-ordination Committees of Syria, an activist group, and the Aleppo Media Centre, a network of anti-regime activists, accused the government of launching an air strike. On Tuesday, 87 people were killed in blasts at Aleppo University. The regime said rebels hit the university with rockets. Rebels said the deaths resulted from regime air strikes.
Also today, fighting between Syrian rebels and Assad loyalists flared in a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus, killing 12 people and wounding at least 20 others, the UN Relief and Works Agency said.
