Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Footage of part of Protective Edge, the IDF’s operation in the Gaza Strip against Hamas, emerged last night. It was entitled: “Video obtained from the hacking of military computers of the Zionist enemy by the Al-Qassam Brigades.”
Arabic captions in the video read: “On 19 July, an operation was performed to penetrate behind enemy lines during Operation Protective Edge.
“Our fighters were ambushed for six hours in enemy territory, until they reached the set goal: three jeeps. During an attack two jeeps were hit and we killed several [IDF soldiers].”
A spokesperson from the IDF told Israel National News: “Some of the content distributed by Hamas is recognised by the military.
“There is no inquiry [into the issue]. We are investigating whether it was leaked from a classified network.”
This episode is the latest in a series of leaks from the IDF. Previously unseen footage of another terrorist attack on 8 August was recently released by Hamas to an Arabic language website. It is not believed this video was obtained by hacking.
