Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

POLICE IN south-western France believe they may have solved a mysterious quadruple murder, which has unsettled foreign visitors in a region honeycombed with holiday homes.

They have arrested a 35-year-old jobbing builder, Karim Ben Salah, on suspicion of murdering two Dutch couples at their holiday retreat in the village of Montfort, west of Toulouse, last month.

Mr Ben Salah, who was working at the house that day, denies any part in the crime. An investigating judge has placed him under formal investigation - a step short of a formal charge - for "murders, preceded by acts of barbarism, theft and attempted swindling".

The bodies of Artie Van Hulst, 51, a Dutch businessman, his wife Marianne, also 51, and her sister and brother-in-law, Dora and Johan Nieuwenhuis, both 62, were found at the Van Hulsts' holiday home on 24 May. Mr Van Hulst was shot four times by a rifle at close range. The others were tied up and stabbed to death.
