Malaysia's trade potential tempted Britain to make an illegal link between arms sales and aid for the Pergau dam, which was criticised as needlessly expensive and environmentally harmful. The ban on British companies followed claims in the Sunday Times that they had been prepared to offer bribes to Dr Mahathir.
