Five people have been found dead in a northern Swiss town after shots were head by neighbours, police have said.

Residents of Wuerenlingen, located between Zurich and Basel in Switzerland, alerted police in Aargau canton after shots were heard shortly after 11pm on Saturday night.

When police arrived at the scene they found the bodies lying dead outside and in a house.

A neighbour told a Swiss newspaper she heard fours hots in quick succession and two more shots after a pause. No screams were heard, the paper reported.

All those who had died were adults, including the gunman who knew his victims and was related an unknown number of them. The motive remains unclear.

Wuerenlingen is a small town of 4,500 people, close to the German border.
