From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Unsuspecting shoppers were in for a treat at one supermarket in Germany when staff started playing ‘Jingle Bells’ on their cash tills.

With the aid of 13 hidden cameras, nine cashiers and one giant instrument, the till flash mob performed the festive tune live at a branch of Edeka.

Judging from the looks on shoppers’ faces, the sudden burst of Yuletide joy was a welcome surprise.

While it may not have Monty the Penguin, the flash mob footage has taken off online.

The video entitled the ‘Kassensymphonie’, which translates as the “cash register symphony”, has attracted close to 2 million views on YouTube since it was uploaded on 30 November.

Edeka is the largest supermarket chain in Germany and this is not first time one of its adverts has gone viral. Back in February the supermarket’s parody promotional video ‘Supergeil’ amassed over 12 million views.

The comedy advert featured 58-year-old actor and musician Friedrich Liechtenstein walking through people’s homes and rapping about the supermarket’s products to a funky beat.

He describes the products as “supergeil”, which means “wicked” or “awesome” and at one point is seen bathing in milk and he casually adds cereal to it.

Edeka has been producing the videos in a bid to move away from its tired, old image and revitalise the brand and it appears to be working.
