Three soldiers were shot dead yesterday by an attacker on a scooter as they attempted to withdraw cash from a machine in the south-west city of Montauban.

The suspect sped off after opening fire near the base of the 17th Parachute Engineer Regiment. In another shooting on Sunday, a 30-year-old soldier in nearby Toulouse was shot dead by a gunman on a motorbike. Police have not officially linked the two shootings.
