Three Turkey ministers resign over bribery scandal, and one calls for Prime Minster Recep Erdogan to step down

Three Cabinet ministers resigned today, days after their sons were taken into custody in a sweeping corruption scandal in one of the worst political crises of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s 10-year premiership.

The Economy Minister, Zafer Caglayan, and the Interior Minister, Muammer Guler, announced their resignations in statements, while the Environment and Urban Planning Minister, Erdogan Bayraktar, gave his resignation in a live interview, during which he also urged the Prime Minister to step down. All three of the ministers have denied any wrongdoing.

Mr Caglayan’s and Mr Guler’s sons, along with the chief executive officer of the state-run lender Halkbank, are among 24 people who have been arrested on bribery charges.
