At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Around 20 individuals entered the hospital in La Linea de la Concepcion, in southern Spain, to free the man, El Pais reports.
Two police officers who were guarding the suspect were able to arrest one member of the gang.
They did not use their guns in order “to prevent the situation from turning into a drama,” La Linea’s town hall said in a statement.
The suspect was arrested after he was recognised by police and jumped on his motorbike to escape.
At one point during the chase, he fell off his bike and suffered injuries to his face and legs.
The police took him to the hospital for treatment.
While the suspect and two officers sat in the waiting room, several 4X4 cars pulled up outside and the gang ran in to grab their colleague.
A search operation has been launched to recapture the suspect and locate members of the gang.
