At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Moscow (AP) - Twelve men accused of mounting the Soviet coup in 1991 will stand trial on 14 April, a court official announced yesterday, capping more than a year of investigation, manoeuvring and bitter recriminations.

The trial is likely to shed more light on the coup, including allegations that Mikhail Gorbachev, then president, knew about the plans beforehand. Six of the 12 alleged coup plotters have already been released pending trial and two more are in hospital. The other four were freed yesterday.
