Police cleared a 100m stretch of beach for Michelle Obama and her daughter, Sasha, to relax by the Mediterranean yesterday after a busy day of sightseeing on their Spanish holiday.

Officers used palm trees to mark off an area of Estepona beach, near Malaga, for the US delegation as onlookers on either side stared. As the First Lady rested inside a canvas hut by the shore, her daughter, nine, splashed in the sea and a security guard swam with her. The Obamas arrived on Wednesday for a five-day stay.
