At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. One plane immediately crashed into the water. The pilot, Marco Ricci, 47, suffered multiple fractures and died from drowning. His body was recovered by divers who used an air balloon to resurface the plane.
The other plane was able to level out and crash land further along the beach. The pilot is reported as Luigi Wilmo Franceschetti, who managed to escape with minor injuries.
