An attempt by 200 swingers in Sweden to break the national record for group sex has been thwarted after a fire ripped through the nightclub that was due to host the steamy gathering.

Staff at Club Adam & Eva had been busy preparing the 30 square-metre bed and other practicalities for the orgy this weekend, but calamity struck on Sunday night when the blaze destroyed the club and a number of other businesses.

“I feel empty inside,” one hostess told The Local, a Swedish news website. “There are no words to describe the loss. It meant a lot to us .”

Police are investigating the cause of the fire in the town of Norrkoping, 100 miles south-west of Stockholm. But the head of the swingers club, which has 2,000 members, said he thought it was unrelated to the record attempt? marking the club’s 15th anniversary.

“It’s just awful,” he said. “The club is gone. The whole place has burned to the ground.”
