From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Video has emerged of a woman fighting off an armed robber having held a baby in her arms moments before the altercation.
The owner of the Normandy bar, Nathalie Leclerc-Pelan, can be seen carrying a newborn child in her arms as the robber enters.
Despite the man wielding a handgun and pointing it directly at her, Mrs Leclerc-Pelan calmly walks in front of him to hand the baby back to its parents.
She then returns to confront the robber, pushing his gun away, taking the bag in which he hoped to steal the money and then hitting him over the head with it.
A man who was sitting at the bar then proceeds to use his bar stool as a weapon against the assailant, while other projectiles can be seen being flung across the room.
Eventually the robber is forced out the door he first entered empty-handed.
The Local reported that as she fended off the would-be thief, Mrs Leclerc-Pelan shouted “You’re not in a bank here, it’s stupid.”
It was also reported that two shots were fired during the altercation but the bullets were blank, leaving no one hurt.
