From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Greek police said the man was arrested on suspicion of beating his girlfriend to death.
A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that a British national died yesterday in Crete.
"We understand that a British national was detained on Sunday."
She said both the man and the woman's family were being provided with consular assistance.
The 22-year-old man is facing charges of causing fatal bodily injury.
His 21-year-old girlfriend died yesterday, a day after she was admitted to hospital in Heraklion suffering from severe abdominal pain.
Heraklion police said the woman suffered ruptured internal organs, "evidently caused by the use of physical violence".
She underwent surgery but died in the hospital's intensive care unit.
The suspect was named locally as Luke Walker while his girlfriend was named as Chelsea Hyndman.
A tribute page set up on Facebook attracted more than 200 members.
Natalie Sloper, who created the page, wrote: "Chelsea Hyndman was one of the most awesome, kindest, fantastic girls you could ever meet.
"Recently she has passed away leaving as all shocked and grieving at this sudden loss.
"I am starting this page so that all who knew her can share stories, good times, witty anecdotes, foul mouthed comments from this wonderful girl.
"Chelsea you will be missed so much. Thank you for touching my life the way you did, you made moments I'll never forget!"
It is understood the incident took place in the coastal holiday resort of Malia, where Ms Hyndman was working.
