Two British men have died after falling from a cliff at a Spanish beach.

The victims were reported to have been posing for a photograph on the Punta Prima seafront, near Torrevieja in Alicante, when they fell on Wednesday evening.

A third British man was with them, but was not hurt.

A spokeswoman for the UK Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the families of two British men following their deaths in Alicante, and are in contact with the Spanish authorities.”

“Another British man was involved in the accident, and we are also providing assistance.”

The third man was taken to hospital but has since been discharged. He is thought to have been treated for shock.

All three men were aged in their early twenties, according to The Leader, a newspaper aimed at British expats in the Costa Blanca.

The men reportedly plunged more than seven metres from a promenade above the beach. It is thought they had climbed onto or over a safety barrier to pose for a picture before falling.

One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries on Thursday.
