Video footage has surfaced of the aftermath of the van ramming incident in Barcelona.

Local police said the white vehicle ran into a crowd of people in the Las Ramblas area of the city.

Residents have been asked to stay away from the city's Placa Catalunya and police have ordered the closure of nearby train and metro stations.

The driver is reportedly still at large and local media are reporting that two armed men entered a restaurant soon after the crash.

The Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, has said he is in contact with all the relevant authorities following the crash, and the priority is to care for the injured.

Ramming attacks have been used in jihadi terrorist attacks in France, Germany and the United Kingdom.

More recently, a legal worker was killed in Charlottesville, Virginia, when an anti-Nazi rally was rammed by a car.
