Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Hollywood stars and U.K. royalty are due to attend the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, where German-language antiwar drama ā€œAll Quiet on the Western Frontā€ leads the pack of nominees.

The visceral depiction of life and death in the World War I trenches is up for 14 awards, including best picture, while Irish tragicomedy ā€œThe Banshees of Inisherinā€œ and madcap metaverse romp ā€œEverything Everywhere All at Onceā€ have 10 nominations each.

Actor Richard E. Grant is hosting the televised ceremony at Londonā€™s Royal Festival Hall, attended by nominees including Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas and Colin Farrell. Guests and presenters include Eddie Redmayne, Brian Cox, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Cynthia Erivo, Julianne Moore and Lily James

Heir to the throne Prince William, who is president of Britainā€™s film academy, is due to attend alongside his wife Kate, Princess of Wales. Helen Mirren is scheduled to pay tribute to Williamā€™s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September. Mirren portrayed the late monarch onscreen in ā€œThe Queenā€ and onstage in ā€œThe Audience.ā€

The awards, known as BAFTAs, are Britainā€™s equivalent of Hollywoodā€™s Academy Awards and will be watched closely for hints of who may win at the Oscars on March 12.

Last monthā€™s BAFTA nominations announcement helped propel the somber, Netflix-backed ā€œAll Quietā€ into an awards-season favorite. Its tally of nominations is a joint record for a film not in the English language, equaling the 14 for ā€œCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragonā€ in 2001.

ā€œAll Quiet,ā€ ā€œBansheesā€ and ā€œEverything Everywhereā€ are all best-picture contenders at the Oscars, where ā€œEverything Everywhereā€ has a leading 11 nominations.

Martin McDonaghā€™s Irish tragicomedy ā€œBansheesā€ has BAFTA nominations including best picture, best director and best actor, for Farrell. Nominations for ā€œEverything Everywhereā€ include nods for co-directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert ā€” known jointly as ā€œthe Danielsā€ ā€” and a best-actress nomination for Michelle Yeoh.

Baz Lurhmannā€™s flamboyant musical biopic ā€œElvisā€ is up for nine awards, including best picture.

The BAFTA best-picture nominees are ā€œAll Quiet on the Western Front,ā€ ā€œThe Banshees of Inisherin,ā€ ā€œElvis,ā€ ā€œEverything Everywhere All at Onceā€ and Todd Fieldā€™s symphonic psychodrama ā€œTĆ”r.ā€

The 10 nominees for outstanding British film, a separate category, include Charlotte Wellsā€™ 1990s family drama ā€œAftersun,ā€ Sam Mendesā€™ semi-autobiographical ā€œEmpire of Lightā€ and Sophie Hydeā€™s smart sex comedy ā€œGood Luck to You, Leo Grande.ā€

Britainā€™s film academy introduced changes to increase the awardsā€™ diversity in 2020, when no women were nominated as best director for the seventh year running and all 20 nominees in the lead and supporting performer categories were white.

This year there are 11 female directors up for awards across all categories, including documentary and animated films. But just one of the main best-director nominees is female: Gina Prince-Bythewood for ā€œThe Woman King.ā€ The other nominees are ā€œAll Quietā€ director Edward Berger, McDonagh for ā€œBanshees,ā€ Kwan/Scheinert for ā€œEverything Everywhereā€, Field for ā€œTĆ”rā€ and Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, for ā€œDecision to Leave.ā€

Leading actress contenders are Yeoh; Cate Blanchett for ā€œTĆ”rā€: Viola Davis for ā€œThe Woman Kingā€; Danielle Deadwyler for ā€œTillā€; Ana de Armas for ā€œBlondeā€ and Emma Thompson for ā€œGood Luck to You, Leo Grande.ā€

The best-actor category pits Farrell against Austin Butler for ā€œElvisā€; Brendan Fraser for ā€œThe Whaleā€; Daryl McCormack for ā€œGood Luck to You, Leo Grande,ā€ Paul Mescal for ā€œAftersunā€ and Bill Nighy for ā€œLiving.ā€

Three-time Oscar winner Sandy Powell is set to become the first costume designer to be awarded the academyā€™s top honor, the BAFTA fellowship.

The harsh world outside showbiz intruded on the awards when Bulgarian journalist Christo Grozev, who works for investigative website Bellingcat, said he had been ā€œbannedā€ from the awards because of a risk to public security. He features in the BAFTA-nominated documentary ā€œNavalny,ā€ about jailed Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny.

The Metropolitan Police said it would not comment ā€œon the safety of an individual or the advice they may have been given.

ā€œHowever, the situation that journalists face around the world and the fact that some journalists face the hostile intentions of foreign states whilst in the U.K. is a reality that we are absolutely concerned with,ā€ the force said in a statement.
