From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The French actress Isabelle Adjani has been questioned by police after an anonymous letter-writer accused her of ordering her bodyguard to assault a former boyfriend.

Officers reopened their inquiry into an attack on the neurosurgeon Stéphane Delajoux after his lawyer passed the letter on.

Mr Delajoux, 44, was attacked by two hooded men in the street in 2009, as he was leaving a party at the home of his ex-wife. The letter said Ms Adjani had planned the assault, after the couple ended their five-year relationship and she had begun a legal dispute with him over money.

At the time, Mr Delajoux was involved in an argument with the singer Johnny Hallyday, who had lapsed into a coma after the surgeon operated on him. According to L'Express magazine, the letter said: "Ms Adjani ordered her own bodyguard to beat up Mr Delajoux (the week was well-chosen: the media believed the attackers were fans of Johnny Hallyday)." It added: "The children were crying so much that it was impossible to finish smashing up his face."

Ms Adjani denied the allegations and "hoped the author of the defamatory letter would be found", her lawyer said last night.
