Two people have died in a suspected axe attack in Sydney.

The surrounding area was placed on lockdown as police negotiated with the alleged offender in Cartwright.

Police were called around 4pm local time (5am UK time) to reports two people had been stabbed following a dispute.

A man died at the scene and a woman was taken to hospital and later died of her injuries.

“For concerned residents, this was a specific attack. It was not random, they [the man and woman] have come here to these particular premises so I don’t think others have anything to worry about,” Superintendent Adam Whyte told 9News.

Another man, who was also injured, was taken into police custody and was assisting officers with their investigation.

Police said the man and woman had gone to a neighbour’s property when the attack happeend and are treating it as a neighbourhood dispute.

Aerial footage showed several police and emergency vehicles at the scene.

In August, a woman was stabbed and several other people injured as an attacker ran through the streets shouting “Allahu akbar”.

Footage posted online showed members of the public using a various everyday items, such as a milk crate, a chair and a crowbar, to tackle the attacker and pin him to the ground before police arrived.
