A video has emerged showing a baby monkey apparently mourning the death of its mother after a car crash in southern India.

The adult monkey was reportedly struck by a car on a main road near the village of Elanthur.

Footage shows the baby animal clutching its mother's head as locals look on, having placed rocks around the pair to guide traffic.

Villagers carried the dead monkey to be buried, the Times of India reported. One villager said: "The baby monkey jumped from one tree to another tree and followed us when we carried the carcass."

Another told the paper: "Losing a loved one will be painful for not just human beings. Animals too mourn. We saw the young monkey weeping over the carcass of its mother."

The baby reportedly tried to wake its mother, having seen it knocked down while trying to cross a highway.
