The incident occurred in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, India, in the evening but the death was not discovered until the morning of the next day, when her brother found her and notified the police, Times of India reports.
The 22-year-old, who was found to be four months pregnant at the time, was discovered lying unconscious in a room. She was pronounced dead upon arrival to the hospital, and her husband could not be found.
Her four-year-old daughter had been locked in a separate room.
When the little girl was questioned by the police, she told them her parents often quarrelled about the way she made chapatis – a type of flat bread from the Indian subcontinent.
“My mother was a good cook but the chapati shape angered my father,” she said.
On the night in question, the little girl’s parents had argued, and her father assaulted her mother by kicking her in the stomach, police believe.
When the four-year-old tried to intervene, her father took her to another room and locked the door. Later, he is alleged to have strangled her mother.
The couple had been married for five years. For the past two years the husband was working in a factory following the collapse of his business, TOI reported.
