At least 34 people have been killed in two days of unrest in Pakistan's largest city, Karachi, prompting authorities to call in paramilitary troops.

Eleven people were shot dead in political and criminal violence on Tuesday and 23 killed the day before, said Sharufuddin Memon, security adviser to the chief minister of the local Sindh province.

Karachi, in southern Pakistan, has a history of ethnic, sectarian and political violence – much of it by gangs allegedly linked to political parties.

More than 300 lives were lost there in July, Mr Memon added.
