The girl, a pupil at the local school in the Jalaun district, was returning from a visit to a farm with her older sister when the attack took place, the Times of India has reported.
According to the paper, the girl's family told police three villagers dragged the girl to a more remote area and gang raped her.
The girl then threatened to report the assault to the villagers, prompting her attackers to set her on fire.
Her elder sister ran for help at the nearest village but the girl had sustained 80 per cent burns before help reached her. She later died from her injuries in a district hospital on Wednesday morning, local authorities said.
Police teams are now attempting to find the girl's attackers and have raided several locations, despite her family reportedly not filing an official complaint.
