An Indian teenager has been left fighting for life after two of her teachers allegedly raped her and forced to have an abortion.

The 18-year-old has been unconscious in intensive care for nearly three weeks after she fell critically ill following the procedure.

Police have arrested the director of her school and a teacher in the northern state of Rajasthan, it was reported.

They are alleged to have raped her over a three-month period and forced her to undergo an abortion at a private hospital after she became pregnant.

Police in the city of Sikar are also investigating the role of the hospital, according to the BBC.

Medics discovered the teenager was pregnant after she was admitted with stomach pains.

Her condition rapidly deteriorated following the abortion but the nature of the complications is unclear, police said.

The girl's ordeal has prompted outrage among locals and protests at the school's gates.

The school has been closed amid an investigation by authorities.

Police believe the two staff members used the pretext of extra classes outside normal school hours to allow them to rape the girl.

Officers have not yet been able to take a statement from the teenager.

"This is a serious issue and stern action will be taken against the culprits," said officer Kushal Singh.
