From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Police in China have unintentionally scored a massive hit on the internet with an instructional video on how to survive a knife attack.

The video starts with a sharply dressed officer explaining: "Today, we will teach you what to do when you encounter a knife-wielding assailant."

The camera then moves to focus on a man playing the role of 'attacker', brandishing a knife.

Rather than demonstrating a self-defence technique to reverse the odds in his favour, the camera pans back to find the officer fleeing down the road while screaming for help.

The 12-second clip has gone viral, racking up tens of millions of views from around the world.

Following the London Bridge terror attack in June 2017 in which five people were stabbed to death, the Metropolitan Police issued their own advice on how to survive a knife attack.

Similar to their counterparts in China, the police say you should firstly run away, without trying to surrender or negotiate.

If this isn't possible they say you should try to hide and make a barricade between yourself and the attacker.

Finally they recommend calling the police, but only when it is safe to do so.
