From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

British actress Anna Reese has been charged with causing death by reckless driving after the car she was driving collided with a parked police car, killing an officer inside, in Thailand.

The 28-year-old, who has appeared in films such as The Tsunami Warrior and Brown Sugar 2, was driving a Mercedes at about 3am on Friday when she collided with the police car in Prawet, Bangkok.

She said a motorbike had cut in front of her and she lost control of her car, according to the Bangkok Post. “I feel sorry for what happened and am willing to help the family of the victim. Once the case has been finalised, I want to go into meditation to calm my mind,” she said as she wept at a local police station.

“I want to tell other motorists to take extra care... I want my case to serve as a reminder for other people.”

It is thought the police officer was sleeping in the car when it was hit. Reese was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident. She said she was shocked after she found the dead body and called relatives, who took her to their house to treat an arm injury. She later surrendered to police.
