Winona Ryder likely to get community service
Winona Ryder's prosecutors have indicated they will not seek a jail sentence for the Hollywood actress but will be content with probation and some form of community service after her conviction on shoplifting charges.
"This case was never about jail time," said the deputy district attorney, Ann Rundle, who prosecuted the case in court. "We wanted Ms Ryder to take responsibility for her conduct."
On Tuesday, Ms Ryder was convicted on two out of three shoplifting charges, carrying a maximum penalty of three years behind bars. She was accused of stealing merchandise worth more than $5,000 (£3,500) from the Saks Fifth Avenue department store in Beverly Hills. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for 6 December.
Ms Ryder's lawyer, Mark Geragos, said he would file a motion for a new trial, but would have no further comment before the next session in Judge Elden Fox's Beverly Hills courtroom.
