Police have launched an investigation into an apparent murder-suicide inside a New York hospital.

Two people were found dead after gunshots were heard inside the Westchester Medical Centre on Wednesday morning. Police and hospital staff found two victims, both in their 70s, who were shot and laying on the ground.

Authorities said the two had "some sort of family relation," while declining to identify either victim’s name or provide additional information.

Local police rushed to the scene on the fourth floor of the medical centre within two minutes of receiving the call, officials said at a press conference. Paramedics immediately began working on the victims, though they were unable to be rescued.

The hospital went on lock down as authorities responded to the shooting. Officials said there is no threat to staff or visitors, adding that the incident was contained to a single room.

Ferguson shooting: Four years on, how have things changed?

Hospital staff waited outside of the medical centre on Wednesday morning as an investigation was underway. The Westchester Medical Centre is located in Valhalla, New York, nearly 30 miles away from New York City.

Fox 5 New York reported that a man had shot his wife "before turning the gun on himself," though officials did not confirm that information in a press conference Wednesday morning.

NBC New York also reported that a woman was killed inside the hospital by a male visitor in his 70s. The man reportedly entered the hospital and shot the woman in her bed before taking his own life.

Authorities found a 0.38-caliber revolver at the scene of the shooting, and are investigating how many shots was fired. The two people who died at the scene were the only ones inside of the room at the time of the shooting, officials said.
