A video shows some of those recent lightning strikes, dazzling in the Arizona sky as they forked above one of the largest cities in the US that sees a yearly monsoon season that can bring heavy rains and flooding.
The city saw at least four days of consecutive monsoon rains this past week, with the strong — and dangerous — storms rolling through and making travel difficult in parts of the region.
As those storms made their way through, the National Weather Service released several severe storm warnings to try and keep people informed of the potentially deadly conditions outside.
Measurable rainfall was counted in many areas in the city and surrounding region.
Monsoons in Arizona are responsible for some of the best known photographs of the state, which itself is iconic of the American West. The storms bring with them monstrous clouds, lightning, as well as dazzling sunsets in their wake.
Monsoon season in the state can vary depending on conditions, but can generally begin around June and lasts at least into August.
