US Election Diary: Dunham, the agent of Satan, bites back
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The modish writer/actress Lena Dunham's recent pro-Obama campaign advert, which likened voting to losing your virginity ("your first time shouldn't be with a conservative"), was respectfully ignored by the right-wingers. Only joking! They went bananas, calling her, among other things a "vile pervert" and an agent of "Satan". Dunham has responded via Twitter: "It tickles me to no end that while my Twitter feed was blowing up with conservative hate, I was literally hanging out in a pile of bisexuals." That's them told.
Zombies for Romney
At least one Hollywood liberal is backing Mitt Romney. Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has released a YouTube endorsement. His grounds? A deeply held desire to witness a zombie apocalypse. "Romney is ready to make the deep rollbacks in healthcare, education, social services, reproductive rights that will guarantee poverty, unemployment, overpopulation, disease, rioting – all crucial elements in creating a nightmare zombie wasteland," says Whedon.
A Stone is turned
Another elderly celebrity has joined Meat Loaf, Chuck Norris and Clint Eastwood in the ranks of Obama's high-profile critics. Oliver Stone will today release a new book, The Untold History of the United States, which attacks the President. "The country Obama inherited was indeed in shambles, but [he] took a bad situation and, in certain ways, made it worse," says Stone. "Rather than repudiating the policies of Bush and his predecessors, Obama has perpetuated them."
