From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A US newspaper has claimed that its Twitter feed was hacked after it posted a tweet saying that Donald Trump was "going to hell”.

The Washington Examiner insisted the early morning message did not come from its own staff.

“Trump is going to hell," it read. "Anyone who ever read the bible can tell you where it stands on rich adulterers. The key to God’s forgiveness is repentance. Trump’s entire political career has been about the exact opposite of that.”

It added: "Also this paper is garbage for promoting ‘Trump and God.’”

The newspaper said it was “taking appropriate action.”

Social media users commented that the tweet performed much better than others on its feed promoting its stories about Republican figures such as Supreme Court judge Brett Kavanaugh.

The tweet was eventually deleted two hours after it was posted.

"We will issue a further statement if necessary," the newspaper said.
