From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Donald Trump is shown in archive video chatting and joking with Jeffrey Epstein, the former financier facing child sex trafficking charges, during a party at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

The pair are seen admiring a group of young women in footage unearthed by NBC News and dating to 1992.

Mr Trump is seen to lean toward Epstein and apparently saying, “Look at her, back there. … She’s hot”.

Shortly afterwards, a second comment from the future president causes Epstein to double over with laughter.

Ex-hedge fund manager Epstein faces accusations that he sought children as young as 14 for sex and paid would-be victims to recruit even more, to ensure a “steady supply of new victims to exploit”. He denies charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy.

In 2008 he admitted soliciting sex from an underage girl as part of a plea deal partly overseen by Alexander Acosta, the then-federal prosecutor for the state of Florida who went on to be Mr Trump’s labour secretary.

Mr Acosta resigned this week over his role in the deal, which he has since admitted appeared lenient in the light of allegations concerning dozens more teenage girls.

Following the most recent claims about Epstein’s behaviour Mr Trump has been keen to distance himself from him, saying that while the 66-year-old was a “fixture” on the Palm Beach social scene they later fell out and he was “not a fan”.

However, in 2002 Mr Trump described Epstein as a “terrific guy” in an interview with New York magazine.

“He’s a lot of fun to be with,” the real estate mogul added. “It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it – Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”
