From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Donald Trump chose the exact moment he officially became the third president in the United States' history to be impeached to muse on the attractiveness of America’s stealth jets pilots compared to that of one the countries biggest movie stars.

“You’ve got to see them” the Republican leader told a crowd of supporters at a rally Michigan, just as news outlets across the world were reporting the result of the historic vote in the House of Representatives.

“They’re just like central casting” he added, referencing a Hollywood talent agency used by the president as a benchmark for beauty, while 500 miles away lawmakers signalled their conclusion he had abused his power and obstructed congress.

With three congressman due to miss the vote, the magic number to pass for a majority to be achieved in the House of Representatives was 212 – and as the threshold was reached, the 45th president was discussing a meeting with US air force personnel.

He told the audience at his Battle Creek rally: “We have the F35s – it’s stealth - and I was at one of the areas where they’re displaying it and I went up to the pilots and, honestly, they’re better looking than Tom Cruise”.

“Good movie” he said, in an apparent reference to Top Gun. “Good guy, too by the way.”

Detailing the many ways the pilots were more physically attractive than the 57-year-old actor and scientology advocate, the president added: “The face is equal, maybe slightly better, the body’s bigger and stronger, they can definitely fight - they’re the real deal.”

“These guys are so good looking I said you could be a movie star go to Hollywood. [They said] ‘No sir I like what I’m doing’.”

The impeachment bill will now pass on to the Senate, which has the power to remove the president from office.

However, with the chamber controlled by the Republican Party and a supermajority - two thirds - of senators required, the ousting of the president via the process remains unlikely.
