From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. At least one Republican is considering lending their support to articles of impeachment against Donald Trump, a Democrat congressman has said.
"I have one Republican that has said he is looking at it, he is considering it," Steve Cohen said on MSNBC Live with Alex Witt.
“I have other Republicans, just like Senator Bob Corker suggested, who have told me on a constant basis that they know this man is not balanced, he is not capable of continuing to lead us.”
Mr Cohen went on to say some Republicans will “privately tell you, by their words and by their expressions, that they would like to see an end to the Trump administration and don't approve of what he's doing.”
He added: “But, the Republican base is still supportive of Trump. That’s who’s strong in their primaries, and politically, they can’t come out and say it."
Mr Cohen previously said he intended to introduce impeachment articles against the US President over his response to a violent rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
“I have expressed great concerns about President Trump’s ability to lead our country in the Resolution of No Confidence (HRes 456) that I introduced in July with 29 of my colleagues,” Mr Cohen said in a statement.
“However, after the President’s comments on Saturday, August 12 and again on Tuesday, August 15 in response to the horrific events in Charlottesville, I believe the President should be impeached and removed from office.”
It comes after the former US labour secretary said he had been told Republicans are waiting to pass their tax-reform bill before they move to impeach Mr Trump.
Robert Reich said a former Republican senator told him Republicans are "just praying Trump doesn't do something really, really stupid before the tax bill."
He said they went on to say Republicans "think Trump's nuts. Unfit. Dangerous."
