Donald Trump has vented his anger at Fox News after a poll commissioned by the network showed most Americans want him to be impeached.

The survey indicated 51 per cent of across the US thought the president should be impeached, a significant rise on 42 per cent who said so last month.

And Mr Trump made his displeasure clear with the network, which has historically been supportive of him.

"From the day I announced I was running for President, I have NEVER had a good @FoxNews Poll," he said on Twitter.

"Whoever their Pollster is, they suck. But @FoxNews is also much different than it used to be in the good old days."

While Fox News is known for having conservative editorial leanings, polls commissioned by the network are generally known to be of relatively high quality. In pollster ratings by FiveThirtyEight.com, a leading news and analysis source on polling, the company's polls have received "A" and "B" ratings, meaning they are highly predictive of current sentiment, with only a nominal political bend in either direction.

But Fox News polls are not always kind to Mr Trump, as he pointed out. They have regularly shown the president trailing top Democratic presidential contenders, including Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, and Pete Buttigieg, when asking voters about their intentions for 2020.

Fox News polls also show Mr Trump's approval rating consistent with most other respected polls, in the low 40s.

Mr Trump has meanwhile consistently cited polls by a pollster that have been called the "worst poll in the world", to try and indicate that his approval rating is above 50 per cent. That firm, Rasmussen, is well known for its bias towards the president.

The Independent understands Fox News has taken a decision not to respond to the president's smears, and the network declined to comment on the leader's latest outburst.
