From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

“Wacky & totally unhinged Tom Steyer, who has been fighting me and my Make America Great Again agenda from beginning, never wins elections!” Mr Trump tweeted after the ads blanketed cable news airwaves.
Mr Steyer purchased $10 million worth of advertisements that criticize the President on a range of issues including health care, immigration, and the environment. The ad argues that Mr Trump is receiving exceptional treatment from Republicans in Congress, noting that a Republican Congress impeached President Bill Clinton in the 1990s for less serious behaviour.
The ads were nt contained to cable news, either. Mr Steyer purchased digital ads Thursday night that press House Minority Whit Steny Hoyer, a Democrat from Maryland, to support the impeachment process. Those ads, published on Facebook, encourage Mr Hoyer’s constituents to call their congressman, and to sign a petition urging impeachment.
Some democrats began to call for Mr Trump’s impeachment soon after he was sworn into office. Congressman Al Green was the first member of Congress to bring the idea to the House of Representatives when he made the case during a floor speech in May. Mr Green later formally filed paperwork to begin the process, though it has little chance at the moment of success.
Mr Steyer is an American hedge fund manager, who frequently donates to political causes related to the environment. He was the biggest donor in the 2016 race, contributing more than $91 million to Democratic and liberal causes — more than the second biggest donor of 2016 by nearly $10 million, according to the Centre for Responsive Politics. That second-place donor, casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, contributed more than $82 million to Republican and conservative causes that year.
