Trump rallies in Butler for first time since attempted assassination: Live

Ex-president returns to Pennsylvania with Elon Musk for campaign rally at the site of his attempted assassination

Trump recalls 'as I was saying' as he speaks in Butler first time since assassination attempt

Your support helps us to tell the story

My recent work focusing on Latino voters in Arizona has shown me how crucial independent journalism is in giving voice to underrepresented communities.

Your support is what allows us to tell these stories, bringing attention to the issues that are often overlooked. Without your contributions, these voices might not be heard.

Every dollar you give helps us continue to shine a light on these critical issues in the run up to the election and beyond

Donald Trump returned to the venue in Butler, Pennsylvania where he survived an assassination attempt just three months ago.

Billionaire and ardent Trump supporter Elon Musk joined the former president onstage at the rally, marking the first time the Tesla CEO has publicly appeared at a Trump campaign event since he endorsed him shortly after the shooting in July.

Musk falsely claimed that Democratic officials want to strip Americans’ of their voting rights, and suggested that if Trump does not win against Kamala Harris in November, “this will be the last election.”

JD Vance, Eric Trump and his wife Lara Trump — the co-chair of the Republican National Committee — and other high-profile Trump allies and donors joined the rally. The family of Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief who was killed in the attack, also was in attendance.

After a series of failures by the Secret Service at the July 13 rally, revealed in a damning Congressional report, the agency has provided a number of security enhancements. There is “a large coordinated presence of law enforcement” at the rally, a source in law enforcement familiar with the plan told The Independent.

Why JD Vance kept making that face during the debate

Vice Presidential contender JD Vance is opening up about that viral debate look in his first interview since he went head-to-head with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Tuesday.

Vance, the junior Republican senator from Ohio, and Walz, Democratic governor of Minnesota, debated each other in what is likely to be the last match-off before election day. Poll watchers declared the event essentially a tie. According to a CBS News poll, 42 percent of debate watchers said Vance won the debate, while 41 percent thought Walz emerged as the winner.

During a recent podcast recording, Vance addressed a snapshot of him from the event that’s now gone viral. In one moment, he’s seen looking into the TV cameras in what social media has called a Jim Halpert from The Office look.

Michelle Del Rey explains.

Cheney dubs Trump ‘petty, vindictive and cruel’ as she campaigns with Harris

Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday stood alongside former Wyoming representative Liz Cheney — one of the most conservative women to ever serve in Congress — to accept her endorsement in this year’s presidential election and warn of the dire consequences of re-electing Donald Trump to the White House.

In an unprecedented joint appearance with the former House GOP conference chair in Ripon, Wisconsin — the place where the Republican Party was first formed more than 150 years ago — Harris said upholding the US Constitution should be a “basic requirement” for seeking and holding the highest office in the United States.

Andrew Feinberg filed this report after last night’s event.

Harris campaign still keeping Uncommitted Movement at arm’s length

The Uncommitted Movement, a group which has pushed the Harris campaign and Biden administration to cut off military aid to Israel, appears to still not be finding purchase with the vice president.

That’s even as she visits Michigan, which is home to a large population of Palestinian-Americans, with reports Harris plans to meet with Arab-American leaders.

Here’s what Uncommitted leader Abbas Alawieh had to say about the situation this afternoon.

We’re hearing @VP will be meeting w/ Arab+Muslim groups supportive of her campaign. @uncommittedmvmt, though not invited, is glad our pressure is helping yield more engagement. What we need right now is for the @VP to specifically say that as president she will respect international humanitarian and U.S. law and stop sending the Israeli military weapons for war crimes. And we reiterate our longstanding request: meet with Palestinian & Lebanese American families whose loved ones have been killed using U.S. bombs this admin is sending Netanyahu.

Uncommitted lobbied the Democrats to feature a Palestinian-American at the DNC, a push that was ultimately unsuccessful.

She escaped the religious sect she grew up in. Now she says Trump’s MAGA movement is eerily similar

A woman has drawn similarities between Donald Trump’s MAGA movement and the apocalyptic, religious sect she escaped from.

In the autumn of 1974, as former president Richard Nixon resigned and the US was still entrenched in the Vietnam War, Cyd Chartier and her parents were introduced to the fundamentalist religious organization The Move of God.

The Move was founded by Sam Fife after he was allegedly booted from the Baptist church for adultery.

As the sect’s enigmatic and autocratic leader – up until his death in 1979 – Fife wrote a Divine Order doctrine in 1974 in which he claimed God had put The Move in place as a “many-membered manchild to govern the world.”

Now, five decades after she joined the religious sect as a child, Chartier has spoken out about the eerie resemblances between the group and Trump’s loyal fanbase setting out to “make America great again.”

James Liddell has the story.

Why are people leaving Donald Trump’s rallies as he is still on stage?

One of Donald Trump’s favorite and most frequent boasts is about his rallies, and the size of the crowds he pulls in to see him speak.

Over the past months the former president has seemingly become more and more obsessed with attendance, as well as his ratings and other optics – so much so that it has become a target of jabs and jokes by the Democratic party.

However despite his claim that “nobody” leaves his rallies, made at a recent town hall event in Flint, Michigan, it seems that that is not quite true. In fact, scores of punters have been known, and seen on live broadcasts, to be leaving the events early.

Trump has appeared to become more frustrated and fixated with crowd size ever since Kamala Harris needled him over it during their presidential debate, when she suggested people leave early out of “exhaustion and boredom.”

Mike Bedigan has the story.

The debate remark that keeps coming back to bite Trump

Donald Trump gets away with saying a lot that most other politicians wouldn’t dream of, but there’s one comment that he can’t seem to get away from.

During the presidential debate with Kamala Harris, Trump said he has “concepts of a plan” to replace the Affordable Care Act, the signature Obama administration policy he spent years trying to repeal while in office.

Since then, the Harris campaign hasn’t let voters forget Trump is willing to axe a law that contains popular provisions like protections for people with pre-existing conditions.

“He said he quote has ‘concepts of a plan,’” Harris told the crowd today at her rally in Flint. “Concepts! Now you know I have said that I do believe he is an unserious man, and the consequences of him being president again are absolutely, critically serious.”

The audience loudly booed.

“Think about it,” Harris continued, “even on healthcare, he has concepts of a plan, so he’s going to threaten the health insurance of 45 million people in our country based on a concept? To take us back? Do you remember that, when insurance companies could deny people with pre-existing conditions?”

The Harris campaign has repeatedly attacked Trump over his vague stance on Obamacare.

As expected, Harris goes after Trump on labor issues

Kamala Harris is using her Flint, Michigan, rally today to go after Donald Trump on his labor record.

“When it came to building the cars of the future, Donald Trump sat on the sidelines and let China dominate,” she told the crowd. “Then he talk down to American workers, saying we can’t compete with Chinese workers.

“And make no mistake, Donald Trump is no friend of labor,” the vice president continued. “He encouraged automakers to move their plants out of Michigan so they could pay their workers less. When the UAW [United Auto Workers union] went on strike to demand higher wages that they deserved, Donald trump webnt to a non-union shop, don’t you forget.”

Here’s the story she’s talking about.

Did Trump fake union turnout at his Michigan rally?

Ex-president’s claim to have organised an audience of ‘hundreds’ of union members remains unlikely

Both candidates have been visiting Michigan to try to prove their pro-labor, auto industry bona fides, with Harris touting the Biden administration’s support for EVs.

Trump falsely claimed he was endorsed by Jamie Dimon — then didn’t seem to know anything about it

At 1.56pm ET today a post was made on Donald Trump’s Truth Social proclaiming that Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan Chase, had endorse him for president.

NBC News did some digging on X:

A search of X showed what appeared to be the earliest post from someone falsely claiming the Dimon endorsement, published from a verified account at 12:33 p.m. ET. That message was quickly echoed by other verified pro-Trump accounts, including some with large followings.

Dimon spokesman Joe Evangelisti quickly pushed back on the claim, telling CNBC: “Jamie Dimon has not endorsed anyone. He has not endorsed a candidate.”

Jake Traylor of NBC News was out on the campaign trail with the former president and asked about the alleged endorsement, to which the president replied: “I don’t know anything about it.”

He added: “Somebody put it up — no, I don’t know.”

Here’s that moment:

The question remains — who put it up? And why is it still almost four hours later?

Trump has thoughts on Cheney’s endorsement of Harris

And they’re pretty much what you were probably expecting.

Here’s the latest from Truth Social:

Has Liz Cheney, one of the dumber people in politics, ever looked at the horrible statements she’s made about Lyin’ Kamala Harris? Every view and policy is the exact opposite of what Cheney and her equally ridiculous father, who got us into the never ending Wars in the Middle East, have stated over the years. They’re being posted all over the internet, and Cheney looks even dumber than I thought she was - But I still say Kamala is worse!
