From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

A pro-Trump group has sent a 12-year-old girl to interview Roy Moore, the Senate candidate who has been accused of sexually abusing teenage girls.

The America First Project, a political action committee that describes itself as “attack dogs for President Trump's America first agenda”, sent 12-year-old Millie March to talk with Mr Moore in the run-up to Alabama’s special election.

Millie gained national attention last year for a video in which she enthusiastically endorsed then-candidate Donald Trump. In a recent video produced by the America First Project and Western PAC, former Breitbart News writer Jennifer Lawrence explains why the groups selected Mille to interview Mr Moore.

“After everything that’s happened in this Alabama senate race up until this point, we thought it was important to not only come here as Western Pac to support Judge Roy Moore, but also to bring Millie here, to show that there is a wide range of people who support Judge Roy Moore,” Ms Lawrence said.

Numerous women have accused Mr Moore of pursuing relationships with them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s. One woman claims she was only 14 when Mr Moore tried to initiate sexual contact with her. Mr Moore has denied these allegations.

In her interview, Millie asked the candidate about the most important issues for Alabama and the characteristics of a “really good Senator”. Mr Moore said he would focus on protecting religious liberties and preventing illegal immigration – even to the extent of sending troops to the US-Mexico border. A good Senator, he added, focuses on following the Constitution.

“Like JFK said, ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country,” Mr Moore says in closing.

Mr Moore’s campaign has struggled in the wake of the sexual misconduct allegations, leaving him in a dead heat with his Democratic opponent in the traditionally Republican state. A recent Fox News poll found Mr Moore’s opponent, Doug Jones, leading him by 10 points.

But Mr Moore has voraciously denied the allegations against him, and rebuffed calls from his fellow Republican to bow out of the race. Mr Trump recently endorsed the candidate, tweeting that the “last thing the Make America Great Again Agenda needs is a Liberal Democrat in Senate”.

The President even went so far as to record a robocall for the candidate in the lead-up to Tuesday’s election.

“If Alabama elects liberal Democrat Doug Jones, all of our progress will be stopped cold,” Mr Trump says in the call. “We already know Democrat Doug Jones is a puppet of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, and he will vote with the Washington liberals every single time."
