Ms Trump showed up to the event – separately from her husband, as some pointed out – in a striking all-white pantsuit by Christian Dior. She coupled it with a white silk Dolce & Gabbana blouse and Christian Louboutin pumps.
Commentators quickly recognised the colour as an interesting choice: It was the same colour Democratic women wore to Mr Trump’s first address to Congress last year, as a display of resistance against his administration.
“Melania Trump in that white pantsuit looks a little Resistance curious…” a Twitter user going by the name “Caroline O” commented.
Instead of blending in with the Democratic women, however, Ms Trump stuck out in a sea of black. Many legislators elected to wear all black to the event this year, in support of the “Me too” movement against sexual harassment and assault.
Mirroring the actors and actresses who donned black on the Golden Globes red carpet earlier this month, dozens of Democratic legislators filed into the halls of Congress in all-black outfits on Tuesday. Some even wore “Time’s Up” pins, signalling their support for the anti-harassment campaign started by some of Hollywood’s biggest names.
“I'm wearing black to the [State of the Union] because it is time we all say #TimesUP on sexual harassment & inequality in the workplace – for all industries – from the restaurant kitchen, to Hollywood, to the halls of Congress,” tweeted Representative Carolyn Maloney.
Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard added: “No matter who you are or where you work, you deserve respect and freedom from harassment.”
It was unclear whether Ms Trump’s pantsuit colour was a political statement, or simply a sartorial choice.
