Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

While the internet has snarkily suggested that the President and his wife may need some quality time to work on their marriage after the first lady appeared to avoid a hand hold twice recently, former Obama photographer has taken advantage of the situation to throw some shade.

With a simple two words and picture on Instagram, former White House Photographer Pete Souza did the trick.

“Holding hands,” Mr Souza wrote next to a photo of former President Barack Obama holding hands with his wife Michelle.

Holding hands.

Mr Souza has been on something of a roll when it comes to trolling President Donald Trump. After what appeared to be a cold meeting between the President and Pope Francis, he posted a different photo of Mr Obama and the Pope with broad smiles spread across their face in the Oval Office.

“Mutual admiration, 2016” he wrote alongside that one.

Mutual admiration, 2016.

He’s also used his Instagram to indirectly comment on the scandals surrounding the Trump White House (he posted a picture of Mr Obama plugging his ears when news came out last year that Mr Trump had given Russian officials highly classified information and asked former FBI Director James Comey to stop an investigation into his campaign’s ties to Russians), to contrast Mr Trump’s first 100 days with that of his former boss (lots of smiling photographs of the former president), and to protest a vote in the House to repeal Obamacare (for that one, he chose a picture of Mr Obama smiling while reading a text just after the Affordable Care Act was passed that said “your mother would be proud” in reference to the fact that his mother died from a disease that would be covered under the new healthcare standards).

Mr Souza has been spending his time since leaving his post at the White House getting a book of his presidential photos put together, and recently went on a tour around Washington to photograph Kevin Spacey as House of Card’s Frank Underwood.
